East Sussex Gardens

Jay Watmough
Lead Designer

My interest in garden design began when I redesigned my own garden and realised how much impact an outdoor space can have on the way people live and feel. What started as a personal project quickly became a real passion for creating gardens that feel natural, welcoming, and connected to the surrounding environment.

I’m particularly drawn to gardens that balance structure with nature, combining practical outdoor living with spaces that encourage wildlife and biodiversity. I enjoy incorporating features such as wildlife ponds, wildflower lawns, winding paths, rustic seating areas, swings, and fire pits to create gardens that can be enjoyed throughout the seasons.

A big part of my approach is designing spaces that feel calm, lived in, and easy to spend time in. I believe a garden should not only look beautiful, but also support everyday living and create a stronger connection with nature.

Alongside my design work, I have a strong interest in traditional countryside practices including coppicing and habitat management. I am currently studying for the RHS Level 3 and Level 4 Diploma in Horticultural Practice, continuing to develop my horticultural knowledge and understanding of sustainable garden design.

Every project is designed around the character of the space and the people using it, creating gardens that are both practical and personal.
